Aya Town Industrial Arts Experience
Miyazaki prefecture
Experience History/Culture
In the town of Aya, a traditional crafts industry has taken root set in abundant nature. Since the 1960’s, more and more craftsmen have moved to Aya from outside of the town. These craftsmen formed the cross-industrial group “Himuka Ozato”. This group has conducted a creation and information campaign about woodworking, ceramics, dyed goods, textiles, bamboo work, lacquer and glasswork, etc., which has brought nation wide attention. At the “International Craft Castle”, creations of each studio are exhibited and sold. Ceramics, pongee* weaving and “Kusaki Zome*” experiences are also offered.
*Pongee is a soft thin woven cloth.
*”Kusaki Zome” specifically refers to a natural dyeing technique using dyes from plants and other natural sources. Synthetic dyes are not used.
