Oita prefecture
History/Culture Group Activity
Kitsuki City is the sole Japanese city which is a so-called sandwich castle town, named for the city’s layout. By taking a stroll though this Edo period castle town, visitors, who are wearing traditional Japanese clothing, can feel the historical backdrop of the Edo period (1603-1868). At Hita City, a place that flourished as an imperial fief, an Edo period street scape still exists to this day, allowing visitors to learn about the history of the area by walking through the streets as well as learning about the Kangien, a private school set up by Tanso Hirose, a Confucian scholar.
