Hachobaru Geothermal Power Plant (Exhibition Hall)
Oita prefecture
Ecology/Environment Nature
The Hachobaru Geothermal Power Plant, the largest geothermal power plant in Japan, is a clean power plant using steam extracted from the ground without the help of fossil fuels. This power plant extracts steam wells produced by underground water heated to a high temperature by magma trapped in the underground bedrock for power generation. The remaining hot water not used for power generation is returned underground. Thus, geothermal electric power generation is a natural way of power generation using geothermal power, which is effective use of domestic resources.
