Satsuma Yaki Ceramic Making Experience
Kagoshima prefecture
Experience History/Culture Industries
The town of Miyama is known as the village of Satsuma Yaki, a type of Japanese porcelain, and is sometimes referred to as Satsuma porcelain. The 14 ceramic studios combine modern ceramic artisans and the kilns that have been handed down to create new traditions while continuing to pass on existing traditions. At the Miyama Toyukan Museum, visitors can experience the artwork of Miyama’s ceramic studios. By trying their hand at making ceramics, the history of Satsuma Yaki will be imparted to visitors.
