This museum has in its possession 66,000 valuable cultural heritage items, and also conducts research and displays the history, folklore and cultural heritage of Kagoshima Prefecture. The roughly 1,800 display artifacts are substantial, especially the items related to the beginning of the Meiji Restoration. The main attraction is the “Kagoshima History Corner”, a large scale model on the first floor. This model is divided into four sections starting from ancient times until the present, and displays symbolic buildings and the townscapes from each time period. Visitors can have a fun time learning about the historical backdrop of Kagoshima through quizzes, videos and the giant diorama. The Kagoshima Prefectural Museum of Culture Reimeikan is a hands-on oriented facility which has created a hands-on experience corner that allows visitors to try on Japanese armor.
