Sakurajima Island is a landmark of Kagoshima. It is an active composite volcano with 3 peaks, consisting of Kitadake (northern peak), Nakadake (central peak) and Minamidake (southern peak). It is 1,117m in height and approximately 52km in circumference. It is still smoking and dropping volcanic ash. Its many eruptions since ancient times have been recorded. Despite of this, the local inhabitants can be seen co-existing with Sakurajima while receiving the many benefits of nature. At the Sakurajima Island Visitors Center, which is close to Sakurajima Port, information regarding Sakurajima Island, such as its historical eruptions and change of landscape caused by the eruptions, etc. are on display.
