Nagasaki Museum of History and Culture

Nagasaki prefecture

History/Culture Group Activity

The Nagasaki Museum of History and Culture, functions as a museum along with reconstructing the Nagasaki Magistrate’s Tateyama Office, which existed at the site. The Nagasaki Museum of History and Culture is positioned as the center of studies for Nagasaki with an exhibition theme of “The History of Overseas Exchanges of Contemporary Nagasaki”, and has narrowed its focus on Nagasaki, which was the sole location where overseas exchanges took place during the period of Sakoku, Japan’s period of isolation. The museum has on display roughly 48,000 artifacts including nationally important cultural properties and works of art with a “hands-on” style. The “Nanbanjin Raicho no Zu” (17th Century), a folding screen depicting western ships entering Nagasaki harbour and the manners of westerns, and the “Toranzu”, a painting by Keiga Kawahara, the exclusive painter of Phillipp Franz von Siebold, the resident physician of Dejima, are both nationally recognized important works of art. The Nagasaki Museum of History and Culture also has important historical documents telling the story of the history of overseas exchanges distinctive to Nagasaki.
