Dejima

Nagasaki prefecture

History/Culture Group Activity

The period of Sakoku, or period of isolation, lasted for 200 years (1639 - 1854). This man-made island was the sole piece of land in Japan where trade with the West was permitted. Because of this, Dejima possesses an unique atmosphere where Japanese and Western cultures fused together. In the 19th Century, Dejima had 49 structures including houses, cooking areas, warehouses and guard posts. Out of these 49 structures, 25 have been reconstructed. Presently, five structures have been newly built, including the Captain’s Room, and join the 15 other structures open to the public.
