Peace Park and Peace Statue
Nagasaki prefecture
Peace Group Activity
In the north side of the park and located on a slightly-elevated hill is a 9.7 m peace statue. The message from a girl wondering around asking for water is engraved on the Nagasaki Peace Fountain. Peace monuments donated from around the world have been erected here, and this park has become a symbolic area of Nagasaki where wishing for lasting world peace is done. Held in front of the Peace Statue is the “Our Peace Prayer Ceremony”, an annual Japanese vigil. Near the Peace Park is the Nagasaki Atomic Bomb Museum, the Urakami Cathedral and the “Nyokodo”, built by Dr. Takashi Nagai, a victim of the atomic bombing who died in 1951 due to leukemia.
