Okawachiyama, Imari and Nabeshima Clan Kiln Park

Saga prefecture

History/Culture Group Activity

In Okawachiyama, Imari City there were many kilns under complete control of the Nabeshima clan in Edo period (since 1603). Surrounded on three sides by mountains and with its unique scenery giving the impression of a landscape painting, Okawachiyama is surely the “Village of the Secret Kilns”. Located in Okawachiyama is the Nabeshima Clan Kiln Park, where the spirit of this town uniquely applying to Okawachiyama, a place with a long history of ceramics and porcelain, has been reproduced. Visitors walking on mountain roads will come across various porcelain artwork along with historical cultural heritage including the ruins of old kilns, all in harmony with the quiet streets and nature. What Okawachiyama wants its visitors to hear are the notes of the bells from the “Meotoshi” Tower which plays 14 wind chimes made out of “Imari Yaki” porcelain. These gentle notes, selected as one of the soundscapes of Japan, reverberate beautifully and softly in Okawachiyama, the “Village of the Secret Kilns”.
